I can’t believe that we are almost at the end of March! March Break and Easter are over and we are now heading into our final few months of school. I hope you all enjoyed your March Break and Easter!
As many of you know, I spent March Break in Italy. Specifically, I was in the town of Villasanta. I also made 3 trips into the city of Milan which was a 45 minute drive from Villasanta. During the trip, I was unable to post to our website due to internet availability, but also due to the pace of my week! My host, Principal Baldi had a jammed packed week organized for me. We visited 7 schools, attended 3 principal meetings, one where I presented on Teacher Performance Appraisal, two staff meetings and I also met the mayor! In addition, our evenings were filled with some amazing cultural events and some great restaurants.
It has been very hard for me to capture in words this experience as there were so many incredible aspects to it. I was so warmly welcomed by Lia’s teachers, support staff, other principals, parent community, but most importantly by the children. On a personal level, I have made new friends that I know will last way longer than the week I was away!
Professionally, I have been reflecting on what learning I have gained that perhaps I can apply to my work here at Greenleaf. There were many things that were the same and many that were different. Again, this is difficult to pinpoint because there was just so much. Below, I have listed a few things you may find interesting.
- In Italy, the province of Ontario is recognized as a leader in education, considered progressive and innovative. With that, comes a high level of respect for principals, teachers and new ideas that come from here.
- Principal Baldi was the principal of 5 schools with a total of 1400 students– 2 Kindergarten, 2 Primary/Junior, and 1 Middle School. In each school, she chooses a teacher VP to support her. She also has 7 Office Administrators.
- To become a Principal in Italy, teachers complete a written and an oral test. If successful, they choose a school that they would like to work in. If the chosen school is not available, they can choose to relocate to another school or remain in their current school as a teacher. There is no interview process.
- The majority of school funding comes from the municipality not the Ministry. This is why I met the mayor! The schools do not have a library. All students access the town library. Principal Baldi has a full time accountant that assists her with managing her finances.
- Children in Italy are amazing, just like our children at Greenleaf! They showered me with songs, stories and pictures. They asked me so many questions but they thought that everyone in Canada spoke French!
- I am looking forward to perhaps beginning some partnerships with the students and teachers of I.C. Villasanta.
